495.	02/09/2005	In ads in newspapers, I see 'S' and 'W'. What does this mean? I am going to bring home a puppy this spring and was wondering what those letters stand for. Thanks for your help. Also, I am looking for a mini. Are they generally good with children? Thanks for your help. * * * * * * * * * * From Li'l Dachs: Those letters probably denote COAT TYPE... 'S' for smooth (short-haired), 'W' for wirehaired, 'L' for longhaired. Also, breeders sometimes use letters to denote the SIZE of the dog... 'M' for miniature, 'S' for standard. Miniature dachshunds make great pets for families with children, as long as the children are old enough to understand that a puppy isn't a "toy", and must be treated with tender loving care:) UPDATE!!! We've had another breeder to contact us about this post. It seems we were wrong about those two letters... "S/W"... that appear in a lot of newspaper ads. Those letters probably mean "Shots/Wormed". We're sorry for the confusion, and many thanks to "Doxie Luv" for setting us straight:))

481.	01/31/2005	My 1 year old doxie is great at not peeing or pooping in her crate, but will pee and poop in the house even after she's just been outside... Please help. * * * * * * * * * * From Li'l Dachs: Well, dachsies are STUBBORN. That's a characteristic of the breed. When you take her outside, always take her to the area where you want her to eliminate. Give her a command, like "GO POTTY", and don't come back inside until she does. Don't play with her or give her any other type of attention. Just keep repeating the command over and over, every couple of minutes. Once she does "GO POTTY", immediately PRAISE her. Let her know that she's done exactly what you wanted. Only then will you take her back inside. If she has an accident indoors, you shouldn't punish her 'after the fact'. Unless you catch her in the act, she won't understand what she's being punished for. If you do catch her in the act, give her a loud "NO" and take her outdoors immediately. Give her the command "GO POTTY", and don't come back inside until she finishes. It may take some time, but she will eventually connect PRAISE with going outdoors. Once that connection is made, she will WANT to go outdoors, because she lives for your praise, love, and attention.

I'm thinking about getting one. * * * * * * * * * * From Li'l Dachs: To be considered a "miniature" dachshund, the dog's weight must be 11 pounds or less at 12 months of age. Typically, minis mature to between 9 - 10 pounds. Of course, there are exceptions... dogs weighing less than 5 pounds have been seen, but that is not common, and is often the result of poor health. Dachshunds weighing between 16 - 32 pounds at 12 months are considered "standard" size. The dachsies that fall in between the miniature and standard sizes (12 - 15 pounds) are affectionately called "tweenies":)

Any good suggestions on house training our new addition? Thanks so much!!! * * * * * * * * * * From Li'l Dachs: Housebreaking is a process that will be a "work in progress" until your puppy is about 6 - 8 months old. Serious progress won't be made until the puppy is at least 4 months old. Think of your puppy like a toddler. Is an 18 month old baby ready for potty training? No... not physically nor mentally. Well, neither is a puppy under the age of 4 months. At about 16 - 18 weeks of age, your puppy will be the approximate equivalent of a 2 year old toddler. At that point, they are ready physically and mentally ready to begin housebreaking. Your husband will have to be patient for a little while. When you can't be there to supervise your puppy, make sure they're confined to a puppy kennel. When they're out for dinner or play time, keep them on a surface other than carpet. Good luck:)

I have never seen or heard of these types of coats before! How precious they are! * * * * * * * * * * From Li'l Dachs: If both parents are SMOOTH, they CAN'T have wirehaired puppies. Wirehair is the DOMINANT coat type. One parent MUST be wirehaired to produce wirehaired puppies. The pups could be longhaired, though. Just a little info... Thanks!
